WHAT IS LECA?

LECA (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate) is a highly versatile and innovative growing medium designed to provide plants with the optimal environment for healthy growth and development. Made from expanded clay pebbles, LECA is a sterile, inert, and pH-neutral medium that can be used in a variety of applications, from indoor and outdoor container gardens to hydroponic and aeroponic systems.

Key Benefits of LECA:

  • Excellent Water Retention: LECA's porous structure allows for optimal water retention, reducing the need for frequent watering.
  • Improved Aeration: LECA's pebble-like structure promotes excellent aeration, allowing roots to breathe and thrive.
  • Increased Root Growth: LECA's sterile and inert properties prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi, promoting healthy root development.
  • pH-Neutral: LECA is pH-neutral, eliminating the risk of pH imbalances and allowing for precise nutrient management.
  • Re-Usable: LECA can be re-used multiple times, making it a cost-effective and sustainable growing medium.
  • Sterile and Pathogen-Free: LECA is sterile and free of pathogens, reducing the risk of disease and promoting a healthy growing environment.

HOW TO USE LECA?

1. Rinse the LECA thoroughly

  • LECA comes dusty and dirty from the bag.
  • Place it in a colander or bucket and rinse with warm water several times until the water runs clear.

2. Soak the LECA

  • Soak it in water for 12–24 hours.
  • This helps it absorb moisture and sink properly (some balls float when dry).

3.Prep your plant

  • Gently remove the plant from its current soil.
  • Rinse off all soil from the roots — be thorough, especially for semi-hydro use.

4. Place LECA in a container

  • Add a layer of LECA at the bottom of a pot (use a pot without drainage holes for semi-hydro, or with for passive LECA use).
  • Position your plant in the center.

5. Fill in with more LECA

  • Carefully fill around the roots with LECA to hold the plant in place.
  • Make sure the roots are supported but not tightly packed.

6. Add water

  • For semi-hydro: Fill the pot with water until it reaches just below the roots (not soaking them).
  • Optional: Add liquid nutrients to the water (like hydroponic fertilizer).

7. Maintenance

  • Top off the water when it gets low.
  • Flush the LECA every few weeks with clean water to avoid salt buildup.
  • Check roots for rot or algae occasionally.
